The Sebring community is reeling after the tragic death of MacGregor John Gentleman, affectionately known as “Chef Mac,” who died by suicide on Saturday morning.
According to the Sebring Police Department, officers responded to a call around 10:20 AM regarding a deceased individual discovered inside a storage unit on Wall Street. The victim was identified as 59-year-old Gentleman, a well-known culinary figure in the area.
Chef Mac was preparing to launch his latest venture, Macarito’s, a new downtown eatery at 305 Circle Park Drive. The restaurant had recently celebrated its soft opening, making the news of his passing all the more heartbreaking for friends, family, and the local business community.
“As with nearly all suicide investigations, Mac’s family, friends, and coworkers have been shocked to learn of the circumstances surrounding his death,” said a statement from local authorities.
Gentleman had been a pillar in the Sebring culinary scene for nearly two decades. He served as Executive Chef at The Palms of Sebring since May 2008, leaving a lasting impression with his inventive dishes and deep passion for cooking.
Born in Des Moines, Iowa, and a graduate of South Kent School, Gentleman pursued his culinary education at the prestigious Le Cordon Bleu in Paris from 1994 to 1995. He later settled in Sebring, where he became a cherished figure both in and out of the kitchen.
News of his death has prompted an outpouring of tributes online.
“Totally shocked! He was an awesome chef and I remember he created some wonderful food when he was the head chef at The Palms of Sebring many years ago,” wrote Sue McCollum. “Condolences to his family, friends and coworkers.”
