The Clinton community is mourning the tragic loss of Shelly Leab, a beloved local entrepreneur whose life was cut short in an apparent murder-suicide involving her fiancé, Brian Witherspoon. The two were found dead on Friday, April 17, inside their home on Pershing Boulevard, following a welfare check requested by concerned parties.
Police responded to the scene around 12:30 p.m., where officers made the harrowing discovery of the couple’s bodies. Authorities later confirmed that Shelly Leab had been fatally shot by Witherspoon, who then turned the weapon on himself. Officials have since reassured the public that there is no ongoing threat to the community.
Shelly, remembered for her warm smile and infectious energy, was the heart behind multiple businesses in Clinton and nearby Savanna. She was a Realtor at Gateway Realty Group, co-owner of Poopy’s Biker Bar & Grill, and Owner/General Manager at Legends Draft Haus & Golf Simulators. Her dedication, charisma, and entrepreneurial spirit made her a pillar in the community.
Close friends and loved ones flooded social media with tributes.
“This is super sad…she was the owner of Poopys in Savanna and Legends. Rest easy, Shelly,” wrote Lisa Hobson-Locke.
Shelly’s brother, Merle Travis Leab, shared a deeply emotional message:
“At 12:41 p.m. yesterday, I got a call that will haunt me for the rest of my life, hearing my father tell me she’s gone. My heart sank… I lost my sister, my best friend, a rock in our family… Someone that was truly a ray of sunshine when you saw her. I miss and love you, Shelly Leab.”
In the wake of the tragedy, Legends Draft Haus & Golf Simulators announced a temporary closure:
“We are grieving the loss of someone incredibly special to us… We kindly ask for privacy during this time. That includes calling our locations or asking our staff questions — we truly need this space to process and heal.”
Meanwhile, Poopy’s will remain open but also shared a message requesting compassion and space during this devastating period.
